Resilience and Vibrancy: The 2020 Data & AI Landscape
Matt Turck
When COVID hit the world a few months ago, an extended period of gloom seemed all but inevitable. Yet, as per Satya Nadella, “two years of digital transformation [occurred] in two months”. Cloud and data technologies (data infrastructure, machine learning / artificial intelligence, data driven applications) are at the heart of digital transformation. As a result, many companies in the data ecosystem have not just survived, but in fact thrived, in an otherwise overall challenging political and economic context.

Mapping Workplace Collaboration Startups. The last decade has seen the rise of workplace collaboration and productivity as a valuable SaaS category. The success of companies like Slack, Zoom, and Atlassian in challenging the dominance of Microsoft and Google’s productivity suites accounts for part of this interest, but the rise of remote and distributed teams is the most important secular shift driving the trend.

Mapping The Gaming and Esports VC Landscape
White Star Capital
Gaming has entered a new era In recent years, it has become clear that the gaming industry is entering a new era. Not only has the industry moved beyond mobile, but cross-platform gaming experiences such as PUBG or Fortnite, in-game socializing environments (notably in metaverses), and subscription-based cloud gaming services from the likes of PlayStation, Google, Amazon, and others have become the norm. In many ways, the industry finds itself today at the center of social media, e-commerce and entertainment trends. In this post, we assess and map the gaming and esports sector, from a global, generalist venture investor perspective.

Technoslavia: The (Fragmented) World of Data Infrastructure in 2020
dataiku
The first time we introduced the idea of Technoslavia – the heterogeneous and fragmented picture of the technological world of data infrastructure – was back in 2015. Since then, we’ve updated and re-examined Technoslavia a few times (in 2017 and in 2018). Where are we now at the beginning of a new decade? In the original Technoslavia, there were eight areas or regions. In 2018 that morphed to nine, and now in 2020, there are 11 (additions include new defined areas for infrastructure and orchestrator technologies). That means – as predicted – that the world of data infrastructure isn’t becoming more unified as it matures; in fact, it’s becoming even more fragmented. At this point, it’s safe to say that probably won’t stop, which makes having one layer on top of these technologies to orchestrate them in an enterprise setting even more critical than ever before.

European Mental Health Tech Landscape
Venture Leap
The Approach to Mental Health in this Century While the 20th century can be seen as the century of health when life expectancy was almost doubled (reference), the 21st century can be expected to be the century of mental health. There are several reasons for this expectation – from educational to technological. Historically, mental health issues, and openly admitting to having them, carried a lot of stigma. Each person seeing a therapist had to assume a risk of being labeled as deranged by their social environment. This seriously discouraged any kind of counseling, and people with mild but untreated issues risked developing more serious mental problems. However, in recent years due to a growing understanding of mental health, the status of psychiatry, psychology, and mental well-being, in general, has changed. The taboo status is weakening, and more than ever before people today understand the importance of mental health for overall life quality.

Canadian Digital Commerce Ecosystem Map 2020
Qasim Mohammad
One of my favourite rituals is mapping out the digital commerce ecosystem in Canada, and I’m very excited to release the 2020 version of the infographic (as seen above). I first published a market map in 2016, which was then followed by an updated version in 2018. The original version in 2016 highlighted 114 companies and the most recent version now features over triple that amount. Each time I do the analysis I’m amazed by the continued momentum in the sector.

Urban Tech Landscape for Berlin
Urban Impact
Berlin is the city of start-ups. We all know that. The Berlin Start-Up Map counts around 3,700+ companies in their database operating in the most diverse markets in the city already. Since we have been working in the field of urban tech a while now, a field we believe has not been as much explored in detail as others (such as Prop-Tech, Industry 4.0…), we started our research for companies in Berlin, that do not only operate in the city but were also founded here. Together we partnered with Dealroom and the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises which are the owners of the Start-Up Map. The research project itself is part of the cooperation with CityLAB Berlin with which we identify start-ups and assess them.
